Proton blame

Once again, a Russian Proton rocket has failed, crashing into the steppes of Kazakhstan. Once again, the Kazakh government has banned Russian launches until an investigation is completed. And once again, the schedule of the International Space Station (ISS) is threatened. In a near replay of the last Proton failure (New Scientist, 17 July, p 23), the Proton’s second stage engine failed, destroying a communications satellite.
